Denmark has expressed its willingness to collaborate with the Nigerian federal government on green transition and mutual economic development. Danish Minister of Development Cooperation and Global Climate Policy, Dan Jorgensen, gave this assurance during a visit to Abuja on Monday. 

Jorgensen emphasized the potential for Denmark and Nigeria to work together in achieving a successful green transition and combating climate change. He highlighted Denmark’s own successful transition from oil, gas, and coal to renewable energy sources and energy-efficient measures. 

Jorgensen also pointed out that transitioning to clean energy can stimulate economic growth, noting Nigeria’s significant potential in solar energy, which is both cheaper and more reliable. Jorgensen stressed that pursuing green transition is not only necessary for the climate but also makes economic sense. He believes that access to clean and affordable energy is a fundamental human right. 

The Danish minister acknowledged Nigeria’s ambitious plans for the future and expressed optimism about the collaboration between Denmark and Nigeria. He emphasized the need for increased efforts to combat climate change, particularly in Africa where its effects are already evident. Jorgensen suggested that Denmark can share its experiences with Nigeria and other countries, highlighting the importance of collaboration in climate mitigation, financing, and adaptation. He expressed the desire to set an example that can inspire others and achieve positive results at the upcoming COP28. 

Nigeria’s Minister of State for Environment, Ishaq Salako, welcomed the partnership with Denmark, emphasizing its potential to boost employment in the country. Salako stressed the importance of international collaboration in addressing climate change and highlighted Nigeria’s efforts in areas such as the sovereign green bond and disaster prevention. The  Nigerian minister emphasized the need for food security and the role of environmental actions in preventing land degradation and eradicating poverty. The Ministry of Environment is committed to taking these issues seriously.
